One of the important methods of search engine optimization (SEO), and maybe the most important, is link population. Link
population means, that having more links in other websites that lead to your website gives your site a better position in
search engine search results.
In the past it could be any link from any other website, but it is different today. When you post a link, you should keep
in mind the following:
-
The link doesn't necessarily have to lead to the main page of your website. Link to the exact web page you want
to promote.
-
The text of the link should be the term by witch you want the web page to be found in the search engines.
-
Make sure that the term appears in the web page. It would do better if the term appeared in the title of the page
and / or in a header (h1, h2 and h3 tags).
-
If the website that the link comes from has a better search engine ranking itself, it will give you more credit.
Even when you're keeping in mind the above tips, if you want to promote your web page for a term that has many competitors,
you will have to get a very big amount of links. I'm talking about at least a few hundreds of them.
The million dollar question is, how do you get such a big amount of links?
If you try link exchanging, you will have to contact someone to post one link on his website. How many people can you to
persuade to link to your site from their site? Will they be enough to get you a better positioning in the search engines?
In the past there used to be what we call "link farms". A link farm is a web page witch all its purpose is to contain
links to other sites. The search engines found out about these link farms as an attempt to fool them, so now they don't
help any more.
There are also those sites where you can upload files – images, videos, documents, etc., and you can also comment other
users' files. It is very tempting to post links in comments, especially when you can do that a lot. The main problem in
this method is, that it is spamming. People want to get honest comments about their files or posts, not outgoing links or
any kind of advertisement. There’s a good chance that most of the comments you have posted will be deleted. Besides,
there are websites that mark links in comments as "not follow", witch means that the search engines will not count the
link.
What I suggest is that when you post links to your website, think first of all about the relevancy of the content of the
page you're linking from. Think about the basic functionality of the link, that takes you from one web page to another.
Post the link for people to see it and want to click on it, in order to visit your website. The SEO should be thought
about in the second preference.
